Tanning is skin cells in trauma

You are born with a skin type, yours may easily burn or it might tan quickly. Both are a sign of damage to your skin. A tan provides weak protection against sunburn, only about as much as an SPF3-5 sunscreen, depending on skin type. It does not protect against skin damage.

Tanning under the sun or using a solarium can cause irreversible damage to skin cells. A tan is your skin cells in trauma trying to protect themselves against damage that can start a melanoma growing. Sunburn can kill skin cells altogether.

Before heading outdoors, check what time of the day the UV Index will be greater than three and, during these times, protect your skin in the five easy ways. You will need to take extra precautions when the UV Index is greater than eight. Find out more

Sunscreen

Sunscreen should not be used as your only form of sun protection, as a way of extending the time you spend in the sun or to help you get a tan without burning. Sunscreen should be used as your last measure of sun protection by applying it to the parts of your body that remain exposed. The most effective ways to protect your skin are to seek shade, wear protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat.

For sunscreen to be effective, you need to apply it at least 20 minutes before exposing your skin to UV Radiation, and reapply every two hours. Remember, sunscreen is easily wiped or washed off so reapplying is important. Find out more

Melanoma

Australia is the melanoma capital of the world. Living in Australia means that you need to be especially careful about overexposing your skin to UV Radiation. In NSW alone, more than 3,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma every year.

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, as it can end up in your lymphatic system or bloodstream, giving easy access to other parts of your body. It is important to understand your skin type and risk of skin cancer. Check your moles every three months. If you spot any changes, see your GP straight away. Find out more
